Aluminum training wire in a 4 mm gauge is intended for branches that require firmer holding strength than lighter wire can provide. Suitability still depends on branch diameter, wood flexibility, and the bend being attempted; a thicker gauge should not be forced onto brittle material. Apply it with a secure anchor and even spacing, then bend gradually while supporting the branch to reduce the risk of cracking. Protective raffia may be appropriate for demanding bends on thicker branches. Monitor the bark closely and remove the wire before it leaves deep marks. For safety, bonsai wire is commonly cut off rather than unwound after the branch has set.
