Aluminum training wire in a 3 mm gauge provides more holding strength than 2 mm wire while remaining easier to handle than a heavier option. It can suit medium branches when the gauge is appropriate to the branch diameter and flexibility; bonsai guidance often starts near one-third of the branch thickness. Anchor the wire securely, wrap at a consistent angle, and bend the branch slowly with support from both hands. Inspect the bark regularly as growth thickens, particularly during active seasons, and remove the wire before it bites in. Cutting the wire into short sections is generally safer than forcing it to unwind around tender shoots and foliage.
