Gauge selection should be based on the actual branch rather than a fixed label: a common starting point is wire around one-third of the branch diameter, adjusted for the wood's flexibility. Apply the wire at an even angle without crushing the bark, then make bends gradually while supporting the branch. Check wired growth frequently and remove the wire before it begins marking the surface. Cutting it off is often safer than unwinding it through new shoots.
